Baby's Projects

I’m not sure if it qualifies as nesting, but pregnancy sure has peaked (if that was possible) my interest in making things. I ordered a baby knitting book in the same shipment as my pregnancy book, and dog-eared all the baby projects in my other craft books (embroidery, patchwork quilting, general knitting). I only have to complete 7 blankets, 7 toys, 4 stuffed animals, 6 diaper covers, 3 sweaters, 2 sets of leggings, 2 sets of sleepwear, 1 baby hat, and about a kazillion washcloths! Good thing the baby’s not coming for more than 5 months. Even better thing: I’ve prioritized the baby projects and don’t expect to actually complete more than 9 of the projects listed above. One for each month, right?
I’ve added a page where you (and I!) can keep track of Baby’s Projects. Comment with encouraging words of motivation!!! Or, to share even more projects for me to add to my list!
Week 11

Week 11: I have days now where I DON’T feel sick all the time! Yay! I’ve gained 3 inches around my waist and 1kg. I crave cheesy things, fig newtons, and mashed potatoes, but hate the thought of onion rings, raw lettuce, and coke. Second trimester, here we come!
Children’s Literature

Maybe it’s hormones. Maybe it’s nesting. Maybe it was boredom since my Chinese program wasn’t working (I’m taking an online class during my queasy first trimester). Whatever the reason, I spent almost all of yesterday preparing something I’m not in any present need of. And I loved it.
The title gives it away… I’ve been pouring over children’s literature! I read curriculum lists for homeschoolers, recommendations and book reviews, and looked up my own childhood favorites. I made lists (as Paul would tell you, I’m ALWAYS researching & making lists). Lists of story collections to last from baby to kindergarten. Lists of books for toddlers. Stories for 2-year-olds. Best books for 3′s. All the best of the best, of course!
After chuckling at my organization, Paul pointed out the good in preparing this far in advance: shipping books here isn’t cheap, and good-quality English literature is one of the hardest things to find. When we’re in the U.S., we can stock up on whatever we want for our child’s first few years!
What are YOUR all-time favorite books for the little ones, baby through age 5?
Lemonade

Pickles and ice cream, anyone? I haven’t actually craved much in the way of ice cream, and though pickles sound good, we don’t have them around here. (They pickle every vegetable BUT cucumber where we live!)
What I HAVE craved is lemonade. According to my local Chinese friends, this means that I am having a boy (because lemonade is sour) and having a girl (because lemonade is sweet). Does the fact that my recipe makes lemonade more sour than sweet mean anything?
Here’s my somewhat-sour but still-sweet lemonade recipe:
Whole Lemon Lemonade
3 lemons (experiment to find what kind you like best)
1 1/2 cups sugar
7 cups water
1. Scrub lemon peels (you’ll be throwing the whole thing, even seeds, into the blender) and cut into eighths.
2. Combine lemons, sugar, and 1 cup of the water in a blender. Process til smooth.
3. Strain through a fine sieve into a glass container.
4. Add back in up to 1 Tbsp of the pulp & peel you strained off (amount you use determines sourness… I like 1, Paul likes none)
5. Add rest of water and stir.
Makes 8 cups.
p.s. I would have taken the photo with the jar still full (the recipe made two; it’s a reused jar pineapple came in)… but I drank it too fast!!

I am….
Mama-to-be, 10 weeks pregnant. Delighted, nauseous, and optimistic. Treasuring sleep when I can get it and lemonade when I can’t. Hoping to chronicle my pregnancy, our transformation from “him and her” to “baba and mama,” and the precious one we’re all waiting for.
MamaWit will be…
Written for my family and friends to follow this journey. Also for others interested in a silly, crafty, thoughtful, photo-loving, simple-living mama-to-be’s takes on life, pregnancy, and parenting, plus crafting, simplifying, reading, playing, cleaning, organizing, cooking, composting, and (eventually!) homeschooling.
